Frequently Asked Questions About Long Dog Leashes

Find clear answers about leash length, training, exploration and the safe use of long dog leashes.

What is a long dog leash used for?

A long leash allows your dog to explore, sniff and practise exercises at a greater distance without being completely off leash. It can be useful for recall training, open-space walks and enrichment activities when used with supervision and awareness of the surroundings.

What long-leash length should I choose?

It depends on the space, the handler's experience and the level of control required. A 4-metre leash (about 13 feet) balances exploration and handling, while a 5-metre leash (about 16 feet) provides greater range in open areas. Choose a length you can gather and control safely.

Can I use a long leash in urban areas?

You can use one in parks or open spaces where visibility is good and local rules allow it. On pavements, at crossings, on busy streets or around other dogs and people, gather the line and keep it short for closer control.

Is a long leash suitable for large, powerful dogs?

It can be, provided the webbing width, carabiner, stitching and handle system match your dog's size and strength. No leash is indestructible. Inspect it before every use and do not allow your dog to build speed before reaching the end of the line.

How should I handle a long leash safely?

Keep the line organised and never wrap it around your hands, fingers, legs or body. Gather and release length gradually, stay clear of obstacles and watch for people, bicycles, vehicles and other animals. Never leave your dog attached without supervision.

How do I clean and inspect a long leash?

Hand-clean it with warm water and mild soap, rinse thoroughly and let it air-dry completely in the shade. Before each use, inspect the webbing, stitching, carabiner and adjustment points. Stop using it if you find cuts, significant wear or deformed hardware.
